Subaru
Affordable sports coupe
From $47,890 plus on-road costs
The second-generation BRZ (ZD8) is the Subaru side of the joint Subaru and Toyota Gazoo Racing sports coupe project.
We haven't driven the BRZ yet. On paper, the base BRZ S manual is the cheapest way into rear-drive sports car ownership in Australia. The tS is the buy if you can find one, the Hitachi STI dampers and Brembo upgrade transform the chassis. Manual every time.
Track day buyers chasing the tS with Brembo brakes and STI Hitachi dampers, driving purists who want a naturally aspirated flat-four with a manual and rear-wheel drive, first sports car buyers wanting the cheapest RWD coupe sold in Australia, and weekend escapees who like the 2 plus 2 layout with a useful boot.

Look at the alternatives if you want a Toyota dealer network and the GR Sport trim alternative (Toyota GR86), a convertible body (Mazda MX-5), more torque from forced induction (Ford Mustang EcoBoost), or a hot hatch with adaptive cruise on the manual (Hyundai i30 N).
Pricing opens at $47,890 plus on-roads for the BRZ (manual or auto) and tops out at $53,590 plus on-roads for the BRZ tS Kiiro (manual or auto), across 4 variants. Prices checked October 2026, so confirm with a dealer.
BRZ S is offered with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic at the same price. The tS is manual only. Touring takes either gearbox.
Mechanically the cars are nearly identical. The BRZ has a softer ride tune and a more grown-up cabin atmosphere, while the GR86 GR Sport is the closer equivalent to the BRZ tS for chassis upgrades.
EyeSight with adaptive cruise is standard on the BRZ auto. Manual variants miss adaptive cruise but get blind spot monitor.
The second-generation BRZ (ZD8) is the Subaru side of the joint Subaru and Toyota Gazoo Racing sports coupe project. FA24 naturally aspirated 2.4-litre flat-four (174 kW, 250 Nm), rear-wheel drive, Torsen limited-slip diff, 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. Three grades: BRZ S, BRZ Touring, and the manual-only BRZ tS with STI Hitachi dampers and Brembo brakes.
