Reports out of Korea say the next-generation Kia Sportage will go electrified, with a hybrid widely tipped as the core Australian offer and a plug-in version targeting up to 100km of electric range. The Sportage is one of our best selling family SUVs, cross shopped against the Toyota RAV4 and Hyundai Tucson, so a shift here points to where the whole mainstream is heading.

What is actually confirmed

Not much is locked by Kia Australia yet. The next Sportage is expected to be revealed globally in the second half of 2027, with a local arrival tipped for late 2027. The reported plug-in would roughly double the current car's 55km of electric range, lifting it to around 100km, though a right-hand-drive plug-in for Australia has not been confirmed. There is no Australian price. For context only, today's Sportage hybrid grade starts from $44,450 before on-road costs.

Cartell Assessment

Treat this as direction, not detail. The signal is clear, the petrol-only family SUV is on the way out, but the grades, timing and pricing for Australia are still to come. If you need a Sportage now, the current car is the known quantity.

AU Outlook

Kia Australia is expected to firm up details in the coming weeks. Watch for confirmation of which electrified versions land here, and whether a plug-in is part of the local plan.
