The Corolla has sold on being sensible for decades. Now a new report suggests the next one could be offered in almost every way imaginable. According to Nikkei Asia, the next Toyota Corolla is tipped to enter production in China in 2028.
Five ways to buy a Corolla
The report says the next-generation Corolla would be built at the FAW Toyota joint venture and offered with petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, full electric and hydrogen fuel-cell options. That is five powertrains under one nameplate. None of this is confirmed by Toyota, and there is no Australian timing, pricing or powertrain line-up yet. The current Corolla is still built in Japan.
Cartell Assessment
Treat this as direction, not a product plan. Spreading a single model across five powertrains is a hedge, a way to sell the same car into markets that are pulling in different directions on electrification. Whether Australia gets the full menu, or just the hybrid we already favour, is the open question.
AU Outlook
Locally, the Corolla has had a quieter year, with 10,182 sold to the end of September, down 28.7 per cent year-on-year. Watch for Toyota Australia to confirm which versions of the next Corolla are bound for our market closer to that 2028 production start.
