Toyota, the brand that built its reputation on hybrids, has just posted its biggest month of electric vehicle sales on record. The Toyota bZ4X found 410 buyers in September, more than five times the same month last year.

Why the numbers jumped

That 410 result is up 413 per cent year-on-year and includes the new Touring wagon body style. Toyota Australia sales boss John Pappas credited the recent fuel price spike with accelerating acceptance of battery electric cars. It is a notable shift for a company that long argued hybrids, not pure EVs, were the sensible path for most Australian buyers.

Cartell Assessment

One strong month does not reset the market, but the signal matters. When the country's biggest-selling brand quietly breaks its own EV record, and points to running costs as the reason, the case for going electric is being made by the hip pocket rather than the showroom.

AU Outlook

Toyota wants battery electric, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen fuel-cell models to make up 30 per cent of its sales by the end of 2030. An electric C-HR is due around mid-2027, with a hydrogen HiLux planned for 2028, so expect more EV metal wearing a Toyota badge from here.
